I've heard a different take on the commandment regarding taking God's name in vain that made much more sense to me than just not saying "G.D." - as if that's unforgivable? Several people I've paid attention to have explained how the commandment really centers around not doing evil in God’s name.

I think you articulate how horrible violating that commandment is in this story.
